Stargazing

Out Skerries under dark skies is a different and magical place. See the Mirrie Dancers in the heart of winter, being closer to the poles than anywhere else in Britian it makes for some fantastic sights.

Stay at Rocklea

Out Skerries, Shetland

Rocklea Retreat is a welcoming, family-run guest house located on Bruray, Out Skerries in Shetland - a sub-arctic archipelago at 60 degrees north which lies approximately 200 miles due West of Bergen, Norway.

As a former crofthouse and now once again a family home, it is surrounded by 9 acres of registered croft and boasts a private walled garden home to many birds and wildlife.

Rocklea is visible from the harbour, only a short walk from the airstrip and Bruray Ward - the highest point on Out Skerries.

The Garden

Nature's Paradise

Rocklea Retreat boasts a mature garden with plenty of trees and shelter for lots of common and rare birds. Spring and Autumn are particularly special times as migrating birds can be seen all over Out Skerries.

This year alone there have been sightings of Arctic Redpoll, Olive Backed Pipit, American Golden Plover, Little Bunting and Rosefinches. We also have a Long Eared Owl roosting in the pines; a truly magnificent sight!

The Sea

Sail, Swim & Snorkel

Challenge yourself to a sail to Skerries - it's not for the faint hearted. With plenty of inlets and bays to navigate you will have the chance to hone your sea faring skills in the most unique coastal environment.

Facilities include a warm waiting room, showers, public toilets, water and fuel. A friendly and sociable place to meet with friends or indeed other sailors.

If you enjoy water sports and sea swimming, the crystal clear waters of Lang Ayre Beach are surprisingly warm in the Summer. The sea is warmed by the Atlantic drift, keeping our waters relatively mild.

There are many opportunities for kayaking, sailing, diving and snorkelling in the bays on both islands.

Kia & Paul

Your Hosts

We are Kia and Paul James, the new owners of Rocklea and are delighted to welcome you to Out Skerries.

We moved in April 2022 from Norwich to start a new life here and continue the history of Rocklea as a family-run, warm and friendly place to stay. We look forward to sharing this truly magnificent place with you.
